Education & Outreach
By sponsoring river educational programs for K-12, the Committee engages children and families in the protection of the river and its resources. Exhibits at community events, such as our annual booth at the Cummington Fair, are opportunities for citizens to learn about the watershed and to share their knowledge and questions.
Educational Activities in Our Schools:
- Sponsored the Becket-Washington Elementary School’s after-school Stream Explorer Program.
- Hosted the U.S. Fish & Wildlife’s Conte Refuge Watershed On Wheels at several elementary schools and community events.
- Sponsored a summer Teen River Clean project to reduce trash and illegal dumping along several sections of the river.
- Established an on-going partnership with the Westfield River Environmental Center at Westfield State University. Working with faculty, students and interns, we share resources, expertise and leadership to further interdisciplinary approaches, problem-solving, and understanding of the environment and resources of the Westfield River watershed. Projects have included summer internships, water quality monitoring, GIS mapping and data collection, natural resource research, monitoring and conservation planning.
Educational publications including maps and trail brochures are available in the Library.
